Questions

How do I check if there is a power cut in my area?

Enter your postcode above to see live faults reported by the electricity networks near you. You can also call 105, the free national power cut number, which connects you to your local network operator and gives updates for your postcode.

Who do I call in a power cut?

Call 105 for free from a landline or mobile in England, Scotland and Wales. It puts you through to your local electricity network operator, the company that runs the cables, not your energy supplier. In Northern Ireland, call NIE Networks on 03457 643 643. If there's danger, such as fallen power lines, call 105 straight away, or 999 if someone is hurt.

How long will my power cut last?

Networks give an estimated restoration time for each fault, which the checker shows when it's available. Most faults are fixed within a few hours, but storms can cause cuts lasting days, especially in rural areas.

Will I get compensation for a power cut?

Usually, if the power is off for a long time. Under Ofgem rules you get £100 after 12 hours (or 24 hours in big outages), and in storms £90 after 24 or 48 hours, plus extra payments for every further period. Use our compensation calculator to work out your amount.

Why can’t I see a power cut I know about?

Not every network publishes live data we can show. Electricity North West, SP Energy Networks and NIE Networks have no open live feed, so check their own maps. Very new faults can also take a few minutes to appear.
