Do you need one?
Most UK power cuts last a few hours, and for phones and lights power banks are cheaper and enough. A power station is worth it if you want to keep the fridge, Wi-Fi or an electric blanket going, if someone relies on medical equipment, or if you'd also use it for camping. Not sure? - Capacity (Wh) decides how long it lasts. Output (W) decides what it can power. You need enough of both.
- LiFePO4 battery. Safer and longer-lasting (thousands of cycles) than older lithium types. Every model here uses it.
- UPS / fast switchover (10ms or less) if it's for a fridge, router or medical equipment, so nothing switches off when the power goes.
- UK plugs and a UK warranty. Buy from UK retailers or the brand's UK store.
- Weight. 1kWh units are 10–13kg, and 2kWh units 18kg+. Think about where it'll live and who'll lift it.
Frequently asked questions
What size power station do I need for a power cut?
About 300Wh keeps Wi-Fi, phones and lamps going through an evening, or a CPAP machine overnight. About 1,000Wh runs a fridge-freezer for most of a day or an electric blanket through the night. 2,000Wh or more suits long power cuts or medical equipment.
How long will a power station run a fridge?
A typical fridge-freezer averages around 60W over a day as the compressor cycles. A 1,000Wh power station gives roughly 14 hours, and a 2,000Wh unit about a day, after allowing 15% for losses. Use our power cut calculator for your own appliances.
What is UPS mode on a power station?
UPS (uninterruptible power supply) mode means the power station sits plugged into the mains, passing power through to your devices. If the power cuts out, it switches to battery in milliseconds, often under 10ms, so a fridge, router or CPAP machine keeps running without interruption.
Are power stations safe to use indoors?
Yes. Unlike petrol generators, battery power stations produce no fumes and are safe indoors. Keep them ventilated, on a hard surface, away from water and out of reach of small children. LiFePO4 batteries, used in every model here, are among the safest lithium chemistries.
How do I keep a power station ready for a power cut?
Charge it to full, store it somewhere cool and dry, and top it up every 3 months. Many owners leave it plugged in with UPS mode on, so it's always full and ready.
How we ranked these
Scores use our published formula: Value (35%, watt-hours per pound), Capacity (30%), Efficiency (20%: continuous output plus UPS switchover speed) and Portability (15%, weight). For power cuts we give full capacity marks at about 1,200Wh, because that covers a typical UK outage. Bigger units still win on capacity, but size alone doesn't buy the top spot. Units with unpublished weight get a neutral portability score. We haven't lab-tested these ourselves. Specs come from brand UK listings, UK retailers and independent reviews including TechRadar and T3. Spotted something out of date? Email hello@preparedhousehold.co.uk.
