Storm Names 2026/27: The Full UK List (and the Storms So Far)

Updated 27 October 2026

The quick answer

The 2026/27 storm season has 21 names, from Austen to Wende. Two storms have been named so far: Austen and Boelo. The next one will be Storm Chloe. Check for live warnings where you live on our weather warnings page.

The UK, Irish and Dutch weather services name storms together each autumn. A name means a storm is expected to be serious, bad enough for an amber or red warning, so it’s a good prompt to get a few things ready.

A storm’s been named: what to do

You don’t need to do much. Most of this takes 20 minutes:

  1. Check the warning for your area on our weather warnings checker, and keep an eye on updates.
  2. Secure the garden: trampolines, bins, garden furniture and anything that could blow about. Our storm-proof garden guide has a quick checklist.
  3. Charge phones and power banks, and find your torches. Strong winds often bring power cuts.
  4. Fill a couple of flasks with boiling water for hot drinks if the power goes.
  5. Avoid unnecessary travel under amber and red warnings, and keep a winter car kit in the car if you must go out.
  6. Check on anyone who might struggle: older neighbours, relatives who live alone, anyone on medical equipment.

If the power does go, our live power cut checker shows faults and restoration times near you, and longer storm cuts may mean compensation.

Fallen power lines: stay well away, keep others away, and call 105 straight away (or 999 if someone is in danger). Always assume a fallen line is live.

Frequently asked questions

What are the storm names for 2026/27?

Austen, Boelo, Chloe, Dano, Evelyn, Finn, Gwendolyn, Heather, Ivy, Jade, Kilian, Laoise, Miriam, Nicola, Olaf, Phelim, Ruban, Shaun, Theo, Vesna and Wende. The list is chosen by the Met Office with Met Éireann (Ireland) and KNMI (the Netherlands).

What will the next storm be called?

The names are used in order. Austen and Boelo have been named so far this season, so the next storm will be called Chloe. We update this page when a new storm is named.

When does a storm get a name?

When it's expected to cause enough disruption or damage for an amber or red warning to be issued by the Met Office, Met Éireann or KNMI. Naming helps people take the warning seriously.

Why are there no storm names beginning with Q, U, X, Y or Z?

The naming group follows the convention used for hurricane names, which skips those letters because there aren't enough names that start with them.
